India
The breathtaking Taj Mahal, that famous monument to everlasting love, and the Karma Sutra, the oldest and most enduring book on erotic love, are just tow obvious icons of romantic India that are bound to inspire honeymoons. But this exciting country offers so much more.
India is a vast, crowded nation that can be challenging for travelers, but with professional help from a good travel specialist, you can prepare an itinerary that captures the rich experiences, vibrant colours, and the exotic scents and sounds of this romantic land.
Northern India
Most first-time visitors to India are drawn to a busy, culturally colourful ‘golden’ triangle in the northwest of the country that features the magical state of Rajasthan.
The most popular visitor attraction in this region is the Taj Mahal at Agra. This stunning marble mausoleum, built more than three centuries ago by the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan in memory of a beloved wife, is one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions.
The region has many other romantic destinations. Udaipur is a beautiful city built around picturesque Lake Pichola, where couples can indulge in a candle-lit dinner at the Lake Palace Hotel located in the middle of the lake. An elephant ride up to the magnificent Amber Fort at Jaipur, the Pink City, is a must, while the very romantic city of Jaisalmer raises out of Rajasthan’s desert sands like a metropolis in a fairytale.
There are two international gateways to the north: Mumbai (previously known as Bombay) is India’s largest, fastest moving and most affluent city, and home to the Indian film industry known affectionately as Bollywood. Delhi is a city of contrasts; at one extreme is the chaotic bustle of Old Delhi, at the other, the modern flashiness of New Delhi.
Mumbai and Delhi are both fascinating bases to start any Indian journey, and if you haven’t yet seen the movie Monsoon Wedding, then get hold of a copy. It is a gorgeous film about a middle-class Delhi family’s preparations for their daughter’s wedding. The hilarious, and often moving, scenes should strike a note of familiarity with anyone who has been involved in organizing a wedding.
