South Pacific Honeymoon Destinations | Samoa

Welcome to an enchanted island, blessed with outstanding natural beauty, crystal clear waters and virgin rainforests. The sun shines, the local traditions and culture remain strong and life is lived in ’fa’a Samoa’ or the Samoan way. Talofa Lava. Welcome to Samoa.

This island paradise is only four hours away from New Zealand but feels like a trip back I time. The untouched natural beauty will astound, from the most incredible coral reefs and sapphire seas to the verdant green of the Samoan highlands, this is a Pacific island treasure not to be missed.

Samoa is made up of four inhabited and five uninhabited islands, as a traveler you will find yourself mainly on the island of Upolu, home to the capital Apia, or Savai’i.
Apia is the gateway to your Samoan adventure with all flights landing not far from here, then you can either fly on to Savai’I or catch a ferry.

Apia is a charming town around 40 minutes drive from Faleolo International Airport, with a bustling market and a surprisingly varied choice of good restaurants. Take time to check out the colourful local buses, if you are really game you may even catch one to the next picturesque village or lagoon.

Touring the islands is a great way to see the natural beauty of Samoa, either take a circle island tour on Upolu or Savai’I, or hire a car and drive the quiet roads yourself. Throughout Samoa there is an abundance of white sand beaches and lagoons to wile away the time, but there is also the opportunity for watersports, particularly kayaking as the islands are perfect for it, and for the really adventurous, a hike into the jungle-covered interior reveals spectacular waterfalls and dramatic landscapes Samoa’s natural mix of waterfalls, rainforests, mountains, volcanoes, and miles of white sand beaches beckon the adventurer seeking peace and quiet away from hustle and bustle.

The beauty of Samoa is how easy it is to mix the the locals. Not only is there regular ‘fiafia’ shows in most resorts, offering a mix of Samoan music, performances and fire dancing, but these same resorts are normally locally owned and operated by local people from villages nearby, and it is easy to discover just how the local people live (after seeking permission of course). Village life is an insight into the country’s past. It is important to show respect in the villages so always cover up and ask before taking photos, you will be rewarded with smiling faces and open arms. A great idea is to attend a church service on a Sunday morning, the population is deeply religious and magnificent churches are normally the centre point for community life.

There’s some great places to stay in Samos, from simple homestay type accommodation to beachfront international resorts, and all the facilities that come with them, such as spa treatments, golf courses and fine dining restaurants.

For a real Samoan experience, stay in a traditional fale on the beach. These are simply a raised sleeping platform with a thatched roof and roll down walls, fall asleep to the sound of the waves rolling in and dream the dreams of a simpler time. There really is something for every budget.
For pure relaxation or a cultural journey incredibly close to home, Samoa is a rising star in the Pacific. Come and discover this tropical paradise and experience it for yourself.
